Currently Preston Avenue acts as a major automotive thoroughfare within greater Charlottesville. However it lacks much of the cultural diversity or attraction that makes Charlottesville the great American small town that it has become known for. The wide street and lack of sidewalks or attractive commercial space make Preston a rather cumbersome and uninspiring place to both live or visit. My building proposal seeks to address these weaknesses by integrating both student and family housing into a newly built commercial green space that spans across the Avenue. By creating striated single units over a new man made topography, ‘Barcode Housing’ seeks to provide Charlottesville with an innovative solution to Preston Avenue’s housing shortage and divisive nature.
